Bubbleroom

Climate & Transport

The climate crisis is the greatest challenge of our time, and the consequences in the climate system are already significant. At Bubbleroom, we work to reduce the negative climate impact that we and our value chain contribute to. Our climate goals play a central role in the company’s sustainability work, and by annually mapping and calculating the organization’s direct and indirect climate footprint, key areas for improvement can be identified, and actions can be incorporated into the company’s climate roadmap.

Our Climate Work

At Bubbleroom, we work to reduce the negative climate impact that we and our value chain contribute to. Our climate goals play a central role in the company’s sustainability work, and by annually mapping and calculating the organization’s direct and indirect climate footprint, key areas for improvement can be identified, and actions can be incorporated into the company’s climate roadmap.

Membership in STICA

Since June 2021, Bubbleroom has been a member of the organization Scandinavian Textile Initiative for Climate Action (STICA). Through STICA, we collaborate with other Nordic textile and fashion companies to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement's 1.5-degree target.

As part of the work within STICA, all member companies measure and report their emissions annually according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. The GHG Protocol is the most widely used method for climate calculations globally, and emissions are divided into Scope 1, 2, and 3.

GHG Protocol

Scope 1

Direct greenhouse gas emissions from activities within the organization.

Example: The company’s vehicle fleet or leakage from air conditioning.

Scope 2

Indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the production of purchased energy used in the organization.

Example: Electricity, district heating, and district cooling in the company’s premises.

Scope 3

Other indirect greenhouse gas emissions occurring in the organization's value chain.

Example: Purchased goods and services, transportation, and business travel.

Our Climate Goals:

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our own operations (Scope 1 & 2) by 100% in absolute terms by 2030 from the base year 2021.

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the value chain (Scope 3) by 37.8% in absolute terms by 2030 from the base year 2021.

Our Climate Action Plan

Bubbleroom has set ambitious climate goals. To achieve the planned reduction in greenhouse gases, we need to implement measures within our own operations and, importantly, work closely with our suppliers and other partners in the value chain. A key tool going forward will be Bubbleroom's climate action plan, which was established in 2023. The plan includes an annual financial growth strategy.

The main focus of the climate action plan is the transition to renewable energy and the implementation of energy efficiency methods to reduce energy consumption in the production chain. In parallel, the company's purchasing department will significantly increase the proportion of products made from materials with a lower climate footprint. Another important area will be the development of circular business models.

In the transportation sector, we will continue working to minimize the share of air freight in favor of more climate-friendly transport methods, such as sea freight. Focus will also be placed on the transition to bio-based fuels and electrified transport alternatives. The returns process will also be reviewed and optimized to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. We also see the need to broaden our external sustainability communication to raise awareness of the user phase's impact and how it, in turn, affects the full lifecycle of our products. By setting clear milestones and fostering strong collaboration within the value chain, as well as within the textile industry at large, we will achieve our climate goals by 2030.

Annual Climate Assessment

Would you like to know more about Bubbleroom's climate efforts? In our sustainability reports, we go in-depth and present, among other things, detailed data from our annual climate assessments.

Logistics and Transport

The fashion industry's value chain is global, and the transportation of our products represents a significant part of our total climate impact. By minimizing the share of air transport and increasing the proportion of fossil-free deliveries, we can make a substantial difference.

Zero Vision for Air Transport

In addition to carbon dioxide, air travel emits water vapor and nitrogen oxides, which have a significant effect on the climate at high altitudes. Bubbleroom has long worked to reduce the number of orders transported to our warehouse by air. In 2022, we took the next step and introduced a Zero Vision policy for air transport to further minimize the climate impact generated by our transportation activities.

Return Handling in Borås

In an effort to further reduce our environmental and climate impact, we moved our return handling from Tallinn to Borås in 2024. This strategic change has not only contributed to a lower climate footprint related to our return transports but has also optimized our logistics processes.

The decision to centralize return handling from Tallinn to Borås is part of our overall sustainability strategy and climate action plan. By reducing transport distances by over 80 kilometers per average return, we directly contribute to lowering emission levels and furthering our goal of a more responsible supply chain. Shorter transport routes result in lower fuel consumption and, consequently, reduced emissions, which aligns with the company’s climate goals.

Packaging & Wrapping

The purpose of packaging is to protect our products from production to the end consumer, ensuring that customers receive clean and undamaged products. In the process, the products are transported and later handled at our warehouse, resulting in significant external impact on our garments. That said, we certainly don’t want to use packaging where it isn’t necessary and are always looking for better alternatives.

Customer Packaging

Currently, we use two different types of customer packaging: corrugated boxes and plastic bags. The corrugated boxes are FSC certified and made from unbleached cardboard, which minimizes the consumption of dyes during the manufacturing process. The boxes are equipped with double sealing strips to allow for reuse, and their sizes have been optimized to increase the filling capacity, thereby reducing the indirect emissions that occur during transport. The corrugated boxes offer better protection for delicate goods than bags but are bulkier and generally contribute to higher indirect emissions.

The plastic bags are certified according to The Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) and consist of 70% PCR (Post Consumer Recycled) and 30% PIR (Post Industrial Recycled) polyethylene, resulting in a 100% recycled content product. Like the corrugated boxes, the bags are equipped with double sealing strips to allow for multiple uses, and their sizes have been reviewed to reduce material usage and increase filling capacity. Additionally, the handles have been eliminated from the smallest bag to further optimize the design and minimize unnecessary material consumption.
